Japanese Green Tea 800th Year Issued on October 31, 1991 (Heisei 3)
The history of Japanese tea originates from the fact that Saicho, the founder of the Tendai sect, returned from Tang (China) in 805, and the seeds of tea were introduced to Japan. However, although tea was drunk for health among the upper classes, it did not settle in Japan because it was expensive and the envoy to Tang was abolished. Then, in 1191, Eisai, the founder of the Rinzai sect, brought it back to Japan as a seed from his training destination, Song (China). It is said that the history of Japanese tea began here. The stamp is issued in commemoration of the 800th anniversary of the introduction of tea, and is designed with "tea flowers and vases".
