沖縄の日本復帰は、1972年 (昭和47) 5月15日に、沖縄の施政権がアメリカ合衆国から日本国に返還されたことによる。日本国とアメリカ合衆国との間で署名された協定の正式名称は「琉球諸島及び大東諸島に関する日本国とアメリカ合衆国との間の協定」である。切手は、沖縄が日本に返還されてから満20年を記念して発行され、「首里城と朝日とツバメ」がデザインされている。
20th Anniv. of The Reversion of Okinawa Issued on May 15, 1992 (Heisei 4)
The return to Japan in Okinawa was due to the return of the administration of Okinawa from the United States to Japan on May 15, 1972 (Showa 47). The official name of the agreement signed between Japan and the United States of America is "Agreement between Japan and the United States of America on the Ryukyu Islands and the Daito Islands." The stamp is issued to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the return of Okinawa to Japan, and is designed with "Shurijo Castle, Asahi and Swallows".
