日本は、1895年にブラジルと外交関係を樹立した。第二次世界大戦後、日本は外国援助を通じてブラジルとの通商関係を強化した。対外直接投資は、ブラジルの産業発展のために用いられた。日系移民は他国よりもブラジルに最も多く見られ、そのことにより日系ブラジル人は、ブラジルの人口動態では大きな存在感がある。切手は、日本とブラジルの修好 100年を記念して発行され、「両国の花」と「サッカー」がデザインされている。
