50th Anniversary of Bird Week Issued on May 10, 1996 (Heisei 8)
Bird Week is a week from May 10th to May 16th established by the Bird Conservation Liaison Council to spread the idea of wild bird conservation in Japan. In the United States, May 4th was designated as "Bird Day" by Charles Almanzo Babcock of Penn- sylvania in 1894. In Japan, American avian scholar Oliver L. Austin (Oli)In 1947 (Showa 22), "Bird Day" was established by the proposal of ver L. Austin). Stamps are issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bird Week, and are designed with "Narcissus flycatcher" and "Bird watching".
