愛鳥週間は、日本において野鳥保護思想普及のために鳥類保護連絡協議会が設けた 5月10日から5月16日までの一週間である。アメリカ合衆国では、1894年にペンシルバニア州のバブコック (Charles Almanzo Babcock) により、5月4日を「バードデー」 (Bird Day) に定めた。日本では、アメリカの鳥類学者オリバーL.オースチン (Oli ver L. Austin) の提唱により、1947年 (昭和22) 、「バードデー」が定められた。切手は、愛鳥週間50年を記念して発行され、「キビタキ」と「バードウオッチング」がデザインされている。
50th Anniversary of Bird Week Issued on May 10, 1996 (Heisei 8)
Bird Week is a week from May 10th to May 16th established by the Bird Conservation Liaison Council to spread the idea of wild bird conservation in Japan. In the United States, May 4th was designated as "Bird Day" by Charles Almanzo Babcock of Penn- sylvania in 1894. In Japan, American avian scholar Oliver L. Austin (Oli)In 1947 (Showa 22), "Bird Day" was established by the proposal of ver L. Austin). Stamps are issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Bird Week, and are designed with "Narcissus flycatcher" and "Bird watching".
