日本とチリの正式な国交は、1897年9月に締結された「日本・チリ修好通商航海条約」により樹立した。第二次世界大戦中の1945年4月11日にチリが日本に対して宣戦布告したことで両国は交戦国同士となったが、1952年10月17日には外交関係が再開され、以後、両国の間では友好的な互助関係が保たれている。切手は、日本とチリの国交樹 立100年を記念して発行され、「チリのオソルノ山と太平洋」がデザインされている。

Formal diplomatic relations between Japan and Chile were established by the "Japan- Chile Friendship Commerce and Navigation Treaty" signed in September 1897.
