International Letter Writing Week Issued on October 6, 1997 (Heisei 9)
In October 1997, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. International Letter Writing Week stamps have been issued. International Penpal Week is an international week that contributes to world peace through mutual understanding through corres- pondence. It is set every year for a week from October 9th, the date of formation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). Hiroshige Ando's "Tokaido-gojyusantsugi (Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido)" and "Edo meisyo hyakei (One hundred famous place of Edo)" are designed on the upper part of the stamp, and the lower part.All three types are designed by Sakai Hoitsu's "Shiki katyozu maki (Four Seasons Bird-and-Flower Picture Scroll)".
