Cultural Leaders Issued on November 4, 1997 (Heisei 9)
On August 27, 1996, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued two types of cultural stamps (Vol. 5). Koda Rohan, a novelist from the Meiji period, and Hiroshige Ando, an ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period. Koda Rohan is famous for his novels "The Five-Storied Pagoda" and "Fate". Hiroshige Ando became a very popular painter with woodblock prints depicting Japanese landscapes during the Edo period, and influenced Western Impressionist painters such as Van Gogh and Monet.
