1972年 (昭和47) 5月15日、沖縄の施政権がアメリカ合衆国から日本国に返還された。日本国とアメリカ合衆国との間で署名された協定の正式名称は「琉球諸島及び大東諸島に関する日本国とアメリカ合衆国との間の協定」である。日本の法令用語としては、「沖縄の復帰」である。切手は、1997年11月、沖縄の復帰25年を記念して発行され、「琉球舞踊‟四つ竹”」がデザインされている。
25th Anniversary of the Reversion of Okinawa to Japan Issued on November 21, 1997 (Heisei 9)
On May 15, 1972 (Showa 47), the administration of Okinawa was returned from the United States to Japan. The official name of the agreement signed between Japan and the United States of America is "Agreement between Japan and the United States of America on the Ryukyu Islands and the Daito Islands." The Japanese legal term is "return of Okinawa". The stamp was issued in November 1997 to commemo- rate the 25th anniversary of Okinawa's return, and is designed with the "Ryukyu dance" Yotsutake "".
