Centenary of Japanese Migration to Peru Issued on May 18, 1999 (Heisei 11)
In 1873, Japan and Peru signed the "Austrian-Japanese Treaty of Commerce and Navigation" to establish diplomatic relations. In 1899, 790 Japanese immigrants moved to Peru on the Sakura Maru, and by 1936, 23,000 Japanese immigrants had emigrated to Peru. In January 1942, diplomatic relations were cut off after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. After the war, Peru regained diplomatic relations with Japan, and in 1959 Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi dispatched staff to Peru. The stamp is issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomacy between Japan and Peru, and is designed with "Lama and Machu Picchu Ruins and Nazca Ground Painting".
