日本とギリシャは、1899年に日ギリシャ修好通商航海条約が締結されたことにより国交が樹立した。1923年、東京にギリシャ公使館が設置され、本格的な交流が始まったが、第二次世界大戦を機に国交を断絶した。しかし、戦後に再び国交が回復し、公使館は 大使館へと格上げされた。それ以降、両国はあらゆる分野で友好的関係を築いている。切手は、日本とギリシャの修好100年を記念して発行され、「トロス (デルフォイ遺跡) 」がデザインされている。
Centenary of the Greek and Japanese Relationship Issued on June 1, 1999 (Heisei 11)
Diplomatic relations were established between Japan and Greece in 1899 when the Japan-Greece Friendship Commerce and Navigation Treaty was signed. In 1923, the Greek legation was set up in Tokyo, and full-scale exchanges began, but diplomatic relations were cut off after World War II. However, diplomatic relations were restored again after the war, and the embassy was upgraded to an embassy. Since then, the two countries have built friendly relations in all areas. The stamp is issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japan and Greece, and is designed with "Toros (Delphi Ruins)".
