In the 14th century, Italian Marco Polo introduced "Zipangu" in "The Travels of Marco Polo". In 1582 (Tensho 10), a daimyo of Kyushu dispatched four juvenile envoys to the Pope (Tensho embassy of Europe). In the latter half of the 19th century, when Japan opened and the Kingdom of Talia was established by the Italian unification movement, diplomatic relations between the two countries began in earnest, and the "Japan-Italy Friendship Treaty" was signed in August 1866. In 1940, the Tripartite Pact of Japan, Germany and Italy was formed, and both fought in World War II. After the end of the war, the two countries have deepened their relations as Western countries and have established good political and economic relations. Stamps are issued in commemora- tion of the Italian introduction project "Italy 2001 in Japan" held in various parts of J apan from March 2001 to June 2002, and designed with "Birth of Venus" and "Notice of Conception".
