The 30th Anniv. of the Reversion of Okinawa to Japan Issued on May 15, 2002 (Heisei 14)
In May 2002, a ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the return to Okinawa was held in Ginowan City, Okinawa Prefecture. The ceremony was attended by 1,100people, including Prime Minister Koizumi (then), Governor of Okinawa Prefecture Inamine, and US Ambassador to Japan Baker. Okinawa suffered a great deal of casualties to both sides in the war with the US military in 1945 at the end of World War II, and even after returning to the mainland in 1972, it still has problems with US military bases. At this ceremony, Japanese and US ministers gave speeches to promote the development and peace of Okinawa. Stamps are issued in commemoration of this, and "irises and tribute ships" are designed.
