New Year Greeting stamp Showa64 Issued on December 1, 1988
The 1989 New Year stamp was issued on December 1, 1988 (Showa 63). On January 7, 1989, Emperor Showa was demise. Therefore, "Showa" in 1989 was only 7 days. The era name was "Heisei". At the same time, 40 yen (3.138 billion pieces) of New Year's postcards without donations and 40 yen of face value + 3 yen of donations (192 million pieces) were issued. 70 million New Year stamps (1/49 of postcards) were issued. The design is Shimono Dorei's "Dorei Snake", and a "small sheet" combined with celebration stamp of 60 yen was distributed as a New Year's postcard
