Great Buddha Air Mail Stamps Issued on Aug. 15, 1951 (Showa26) In July 1953 (Showa 28), foreign postage stamps were revised, and four new airmail stamps (70 yen, 80 yen, 115 yen, 145 yen) were issued in August of the same year.
The design depicts the Great Buddha of Kamakura, an airplane, and Mt. Fuji in the background. However, after this, problems began to arise in domestic mailing by airmail. There was a contradiction that airmail in big cities may be slower than regular express mail, and in that case, express delivery may be cheaper. For that reason, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications announced in November 1953 that JapanThe domestic airmail system was abolished.
