Centenary of the Telephone Service Issued on December 14, 1990 (Heisei 2) The history of Japanese telephones originates from the start of telephone services between Tokyo and Yokohama in 1890 (Meiji 23). The number of subscribers was 155 in Tokyo and 42 in Yokohama, and the monthly fee was 150,000 yen. The telephone service extended to Osaka in the same year, and in 1940 (Showa 15), the number of telephone subscribers exceeded 1 million.
The stamp was issued in December 1990 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of Japan's telephone service, and is designed with Senseki Nakamura's "Figure of Women's Telephone Use".
