Centennial of Japan-Turkey Treaty Issued on June 13, 1990 (Heisei 2) In 1890, the "Ertu?rul Ship" was dispatched to Japan as an envoy of Abdul Hamid II of the Ottoman Sultan. The envoy handed a letter to the Emperor Meiji .But, on the way home, Bic typhoon attacked the coast of Wakayama Prefecture , The Ship were sank. At that time, more than 500 crew members died. But KiiResidents of Oshima rushed to the rescue and 69 people were rescued. Upon hearing the news, Emperor Meiji hurriedly dispatched a doctor and a nurse to help him. In 1891, the survivors were repatriated to the Ottoman Empire by the Japanese Navy battleships Kongo and Hiei. The incident was widely reported in Turkey, and friendly feelings toward the Japanese were fostered from this time. The stamp was issued in June 1990 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Japan and Turkey, and designed with the "Tulip and Carnation Pattern".
