Electric Locomotive Series 5 Issued on 7. 18, 1990 (Heisei 2) Japan's first electric locomotive is the private railway Osaka Koya Railway (Nankai-KoyaLine), which opened in 1916. Initially, the parts were made by United States, but after that, all the parts were domestically produced. The first introduction of electric locomotives by the Japanese National Railways was to electrify the Shin-Etsu Main Line (Yokokawa Station-Karuizawa Station) in 1912 (1000 type), and in 1919 improved the 1000 type to increase the ED40 type. In the 1950s after the war, the ED70 type was manufactured and used for the Hokuriku Main Line. In 1956, the Tokaido Main Line was completely electrified. In 1964, the Tokaido Shinkansen was opened.
