Centenary of Modern Waterworks
Issued on October 16, 1987 (Showa 62)

Centenary of Modern Waterworks Issued on October 16, 1987 (Showa 62) Japan's modern water supply was first established in Yokohama in October 1887 (Meiji 20) under the guidance of a British engineer. The "modern water supply" is a water supply that filters river water and supplies it under pressure with iron pipes, which is the same as the water supply system we use today.
The stamp was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of modern water services, and Japan's first shared water service faucet was designed.
