In November 1983, the Antarctic research ship Shirase went into service. The Shirase is a large ship with a total length of 134 meters and a total width of 28 meters, and is the third Antarctic research ship in Japan. "Shirase" has made 25 round trips between Japan and Antarctica, and has contributed to the development of various disciplines such as meteorology, earth science, and biology.
The stamp was issued to commemorate the service and is designed with "Shirase, Penguins and Aurora".
