能楽は、日本の伝統芸能であり、能と狂言とを包含する総称である。重要無形文化財に指定され、ユネスコ無形文化遺産に登録されている。国立能楽堂（National Noh Theatre）は、独立行政法人日本芸術文化振興会の能楽専門の公演場である。
1983年8月竣工（9月開場）した。切手は、その開場を記念して発行され、能楽師と、国立能楽堂がデザインされている。

Noh is a traditional Japanese performing art and is a general term that includes Noh and Kyogen. It is designated as an important intangible cultural property and registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The National Noh Theater is a performance hall specializing in Noh theater by the Japan Arts Council.
Completed in August 1983 (opened in September).
Stamps are issued to commemorate the opening of the stamp, and are designed by Noh performers and the National Noh Theater.
