日本で最初に動物園が出来たのは1882年（明治15年）の事。 東京上野の恩賜上野動物園だ。 上野動物園は歴史があるだけではなく、来園者数でも日本一を誇る。 ちなみに日本で２番目に古い動物園は1903年に開園した京都市動物園、３番目は1915年開園の天王寺動物園である。
切手は、ゴリラとフラミンゴ、ライオンとペンギン、パンダと象、キリンとシマウマがデザインされている。
