50th Anniv. Training Sailing-Ships Issued on March 17, 1980 (Showa 55) The birth of the Nippon Maru and Kaiwo Maru was caused by the disaster in 1927 (Showa 2), when the training ship "Kirishima Maru" sank due to a storm and all 53 people died. The accident triggered, the decision to build two large training sailing vessels in 1928 (Showa 3). Kawasaki Shipyard in Kobe was in charge of the construction, the first ship was named "Nippon Maru", launched in January 1930 (Showa 5), the second ship was named "Kaiwo Maru", and in February. Launched.
Stamps are issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the launch of both ships, and are designed with the "Practice sailing ship and National Institute for Sea Training mark".
