100th Anniv. of Joining I.T.U. Issued on October 13, 1979 (Showa 54) The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations. Founded in Paris in May 1865, the ITU is the oldest international organization in the world.Based on the International Telecommunication Union Charter, the Union promotes the establishment of international standardization and regulation in the fields of wireless and telecommunications. There are 193 member states, including the Vatican, which is a member of the United Nations, and Japan has been involved in the management and operation of the ITU as a member of the Security Council since 1959.The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued stamps commemorating the 75th anniversary of the organization's founding in 1954, before the issuance of this stamp. This stamp is designed with ITU letters and the earth by optical fiber.
