Centenary of UPU Issued on October 9, 1974 (Showa 49) In 1874, the establishment of an international organization for the General Postal Union was established. Japan joined on June 1, 1877 (Meiji 10). In 1878, at the Second Grand Conference in Paris, the General Postal Union was renamed the Universal Postal Union (UPU).The stamp was issued in 1974 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its founding, and is designed with the UPU commemorative flag and Tawaraya Sotatsu's "Ushioizu". In the past, in 1927, four types of stamps commemorating the 50th anniversary of UPU membership were issued in Japan, and in 1949 after the war, four types of stamps commemorating the 75th anniversary of the founding and small sheets were issued.
