Centenary of the Family Registration System
Issued on October 27, 1971 (Showa 46)
Japan's first family register system was established in the middle of the 6th century. In modern times, preparations for the family register system began in 1871, and the family register system was established in 1886 (Meiji 31). Under the "family system", the family register before the war was based on the "house" as the basic unit, and it was customary for the eldest son to inherit the house and inherited property. After the war, the "New Family Register Act" was enforced in 1948 by the GHQ occupation policy. Under the New Family Register Act, the basic unit is a couple and their children, as opposed to the prewar "house" unit. In other words, the "family system" was abolished and changed to "parent-child unit registration", and the "owner" became the "leader".The stamp is issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the individuality system, and is designed with a child's face and 100-year numbers.
