Kitakyushu City Issued on February 10, 1963 (Showa 38) In February 1963, Kitakyushu was born as an equal merger of the five cities of Moji, Kokura, Wakamatsu, Yawata, and Tobata.It became the first ordinance-designated city in areas other than three major metropolitan areas (Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya). In addition to the Kitakyushu metropolitan area centered on Kitakyushu city, the Kanmon metropolitan area is formed with Shimonoseki city in Yamaguchi prefecture, which is adjacent across the Kanmon strait. The stamp was issued to commemorate the inauguration of Kitakyushu City, and a map, steamer, chimney and pigeon were designed.
