International Letter Writing Week
Issued on October 8, 1961 (Showa 36)

International Letter Writing Week Issued on October 8, 1961 (Showa 36) In October 1961, the International Letter Writing Week stamp was issued. This is an international week that contributes to world peace through mutual understanding through correspondence. It is set every year for a week from October 9, the date of formation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The stamp is designed with the 53rd Tokaido "Hakone" drawn by the Ukiyo-e artist "Ando Hiroshige" from the Edo period. Ukiyo-e around this time was used as wrapping paper for high-grade ceramics exported to Europe. Therefore, it attracted the attention of European impression painters at that time, and many famous painters such as Van Gogh and Monet copied them. This is so-called "Japonism".
