Lt.Shirase's Antarctic Expedition Issued on November 29, 1960 (Showa 35)

Lt.Shirase's Antarctic Expedition Issued on November 29, 1960 (Showa 35) 1960 is 50 years since Japan started observing the Antarctic. In 1910, Lieutenant Shirase of the Japanese Army began observing the Antarctic. As a result, he succeeded in reaching the South Pole in November 1911 and named the area 'Yamato SETSUGEN in which he explored. In 1956, after World War II, the 1st Antarctic Research Expedition reached the South Pole again on the Antarctic research ship Soya and opened Syowa Station. Since then, four other Antarctic stations have been established to conduct research and observations such as meteorological observations, ionospheric observations, seafloor topography surveys, and physical oceanography. The stamp was issued to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Japan's Antarctic Expedition, and is designed with Lieutenant Shirase and an Antarctic map.
