International Letter Writing Week Issued on October 4, 1959 (Showa 34) International Letter Writing Week is a postal campaign aimed at helping people around the world deepen mutual understanding and contribute to world peace. The period is one week including October 9th, which is the anniversary of the formation of the UPU (Universal Postal Union). Japan has issued stamps for International letter Writing week since the previous year, and this is the second issue.
The stamp is designed with the 53rd Tokaido "Kuwana" drawn by Hiroshige Ando, an ukiyo-e artist from the Edo period.
