Tokyo Quincentenary Issued on October 1, 1956 (Showa 31) In October 1956 (Showa 31), the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued a stamp commemorating the 500th anniversary of the opening of Tokyo.Tokyo began in 1457 when Edo Castle was built by Ota Dokan.Since 1956 is the 500th year since then, the "Great Tokyo Festival" was held on Tokyo Citizen's Day to commemorate this.After that, it became an annual event, and from 1982 it was renamed the "Furusato Tokyo Festival".
