Dial Telephone System Issued on Jun. 8, 1956 (Showa31) The history of telephones in Okinawa began in (Meiji 43). From the early days of the opening of telephones to before the advent of automatic exchanges, "switchboard operators" manually connected the lines. In mainland Japan, some automatic telephones started in 1926 (Taisho 15), but Okinawa was automated in June 1956 (Showa 31). Stamps are issued in commemoration of this, and "phones and dials" are designed. Reference; TIME & SPACE by KDDI
