Restoration of Shureimon Issued on Oct. 1, 1958 (Showa33)

Restoration of Shureimon Issued on Oct. 1, 1958 (Showa33) This gate is located at the entrance of the Shuri Castle Ruins in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, and was built during the Shosei era in the 16th century. Initially called "Shurimon", it later became Shureimon. It is a wooden tile-roofed, multi-story building that is unique to Ryukyu. It was burnt down in 1945 (Showa 20) due to war damage, but was rebuilt in 1958 (Showa 33). There was a fire in Shurijo Castle in 2019, but it escaped inflammation. This stamp was issued in 1958 to commemorate the restoration and depicts the "Shureimon". This stamp was speculated by some investors in 1973, but it has subsided due to opposition from the Japan Philatelic Society and others.
