Adult's Day Issued on Jan. 15, 1963 (Showa38)

Adult's Day Issued on Jan. 15, 1963 (Showa38) In January 1936 (Showa 38), an Okinawan adult ceremony commemorative stamp was issued. The design is a relief for adult men and women. The origin of the seijin-shiki as a regional ritual is said to be the "Youth Festival" held in Warabi City, Saitama Prefecture in 1946 (Showa 21). It spread nationwide, and Coming-of-Age Day was enacted on January 15, 1949. The reason why Coming-of-Age Day is held on January 15th is that it has long been a custom in Japan to perform adult rituals on the first full moon of the new year.
