Cultural Treasures Protection Week Issued on Dec. 1, 1971 (Showa46)

Cultural Treasures Protection Week Issued on Dec.1, 1971 (Showa46) In Okinawa, various activities are being carried out for the purpose of promoting the protection of cultural properties of the ancient Ryukyu Kingdom. This time, "Torinji Niohzo" was adopted as a stamp. This statue is located on Ishigaki Island and is the oldest wooden statue in Okinawa , made by Kudeken Masatada in 1737. Facing the mountain gate, the left is the statue of King Nio, and the right is the statue of Mishakurikishi. Both were washed away by the 1771 tsunami, but their damaged limbs have been repaired and preserved. It was designated as an important cultural property of the Ryukyu government in February 1956, and became a tangible cultural property designated by Okinawa Prefecture after returning to the mainland.
