Centenary of Joining U.P.U. Issued on June 20, 1977 (Showa 52) Japan joined the Universal Postal Union in June 1877 (Meiji 10). It is the 23rd member country and the first in Asia. This is currently set as "Universal Postal Union Membership Anniversary". Japan had withdrawn during World War II, but rejoined in June 1948 (Showa 23).Two types of stamps and a small sheet were issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the membership of the Universal Postal Union, and "pigs and posts" and "UPU mark and early Japanese postal flags" were designed.
