Reversion of Okinawa Issued on May 15, 1972 (Showa 47)

Reversion of Okinawa Issued on May 15, 1972 (Showa 47) In May 1972, Okinawa was returned to Japan. At the Japan-US summit meeting in 1969 (Showa 44), it was decided that President Nixon of the United States would return the "1972, nuclear-free, mainland-level" that maintained the US military base. The Japanese and US governments signed the Okinawa Reversion Agreement in 1971, and Okinawa returned to Japan on May 15, 1972.
Stamps are issued in commemoration of this, and are designed with Shureimon and Bingata (bingata: a traditional dyeing technique that represents Okinawa).
