Centenary of the Japanese National Railways
Issued on March 15, 1972 (Showa 47)
The Japanese railway officially opened in October 1972 (Meiji 5) between Shimbashi Station and Yokohama Station. Railways became very popular, and the demand for railways increased soon after the opening of the railway, which became the cornerstone of the subsequent development of the national railway transportation network. As for the prewar railway commemorative stamp, "Railway 70th Anniversary Stamp" was issued in 1942 (Showa 17).Two types of stamps were issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the railway, and Hiroshige III's "Railway opening map" and the C62 type steam locomotive are designed.
