Lighthouse Centenary Issued on November 1, 1968 (Showa 43) The history of Japanese lighthouses began with the completion and lighting of the Western-style lighthouse Kannonzaki Lighthouse in 1869.The Kannonzaki Lighthouse was built by Leonce Verny, a French engineer hired by the Meiji government, to quickly build a lighthouse in Japan, which did not have Western-style lighthouse construction technology at the time.Stamps are issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary, and old and new lighthouses are designed.
