Re-opening of the Antarctic Observation
Issued on November 20, 1965 (Showa 40)
1965 is the 55th year since the Japanese Army's Lieutenant Nobu Shirase began observing the Antarctic Research Expedition in 1910. That year, Japan resumed Antarctic development. After the war, in 1956, the 1st Antarctic Research Expedition reached the South Pole again on the Antarctic Research Expedition "Soya" and opened Syowa Station. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications issued stamps following the 50th anniversary of Antarctic Research Expedition in 1960. The stamp is designed with an Antarctic map, an aurora, and an observation ship.
