Opening of New Tokaido Line Issued on October 1, 1964 (Showa 39)

Opening of New Tokaido Line Issued on October 1, 1964 (Showa 39) The Tokaido Shinkansen is the world's first high-speed railway and has the oldest history as a Japanese Shinkansen. Before the opening of the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Tokaido Main Line, which is the main artery of the east and west, had a tight line capacity under high economic growth, and was forced to drastically increase its transportation capacity. In response, the Japanese National Railways decided to build a new standard gauge line capable of high-speed operation. Construction began in April 1959, and it opened on October 1, 1964, just before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics, and was named the "Tokaido Shinkansen."
The stamp was issued to commemorate the opening of the Tokaido Shinkansen, and the Shinkansen 0 series limited express train (Kodama) is designed.
